the stories of the everyday

united against violence

a workshop hosted by UNHCR and partners for refugee leaders in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

In my past life, I worked as a humanitarian in the child protection response to emergencies. Particularly, I worked in areas affected by conflict (South Sudan and Somalia). So, it was with great pleasure that I was invited to photograph an event hosted by UNHCR and partners on Nov. 29, 2018 on the issue of violence against women and girls. An issue that deeply impacts women and girls all over the world, but particularly those in vulnerable circumstances. Over 200 refugee leaders and civil society members were invited to participate in workshops, self-defence classes and theatrical performances aimed at transforming attitudes of men and women about violence against women and girls. Listening to the stories, watching the performances, and witnessing the intensity of the self-defence class left me moved and inspired. I hope you enjoy the glimpse into the day.
